Technician

CREAF needs to incorporate a technician profile to the project C-GLOPS1 (Copernicus Global Land Service – Framework Contract for the operation, evaluation and evolution of the Global Land component of the Copernicus Land Service. Lot 1: Operation of the Global Land Component, thematic domain Vegetation and Energy). The contract is expected to start at the beginning of May 2017, and will finish at the end of the tasks required for the project (duration expected for the contract: one year).

TASKS
This position requires an engineer who has an international record in the field of quantitative methods of Optical Remote Sensing. The successful candidate is expected to contribute in the development and evolution of the algorithm for the estimation of Leaf Area Index (LAI), the area of leaves per unit ground area, the Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation Absorbed by vegetation (FAPAR), and the fraction of vegetation cover (FCOVER) from Sentinel-3 observations. The main task will consist on training machine learning techniques (neural networks, Gaussian process, support vector machine…) over existing satellite products and/or physical radiative transfer model simulations for the retrieval of LAI, FAPAR and FCOVER. The candidate will also contribute to the scientific validation and application of the generated biophysical variables.

REQUIREMENTS

CREAF seeks to appoint a highly qualified junior engineer/researcher to this position and, therefore, especially encourages early-career scholars to apply.

• Forestry engineering, signal analysis engineering, or equivalent.
• Good expertise in satellite image processing requiring massive processing capability.
• Good expertise in machine learning techniques (neural networks, Gaussian process, support vector machine…).
• Programming skills ( Matlab, Python, Javascript… ).

SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA

The selection process is led by the main researcher of the project, and will be overseen by the Management Office and the Human Resources Area of CREAF. This process consists of:
