Description of the research group
The Research Group Transport, Infrastructure and Territory – tGIS was established in 2005 joining the interests of researchers in transport geography and economics mainly from Universidad Complutense Madrid (UCM). The group gained strength with the incorporation of researchers from related disciplines like architecture and civil engineering. In 2012 the group joined TRANSyT, the Transport Research Centre at Universidad Politécnica of Madrid, which favours further collaboration in research projects, knowledge transfer and networking opportunities.

The group has a broad experience in the study of metropolitan processes from the point of view of transport and mobility and their relations with the territory and urban economy. Moreover, the team accumulates a wealth of experience and expertise in quantitative techniques and in GIS analysis applied to the study of metropolitan areas in the European framework. During the last years, the group has launched a new research line related to the use of Big Data in the fields of mobility, transport and urban dynamics.

Research topic
TGIS most recent research activity is focused on:

Network and accessibility analysis, developing and implementing accessibility indicators in the environment of GIS.
Urban Mobility and its relations with urban regions, with a focus on European metropolitan areas
The use of Big Data sources for the analysis of mobility, accessibility, tourism and metropolitan dynamics.
DynAccess and SocialBigdata-CM are the most recent and outstanding projects we are coordinating. Both are devoted to incorporate big data in the above mentioned research areas, thus expanding our analysis in more spatio-temporal detail.

DynAccess is related to dynamic mobility and accessibility analysis in the urban scale. This includes the integration of the temporal variability of both accessing times and destination attractiveness, and we will develop methodologies to obtain OD matrices at different time frames in order to measure the attractiveness of each destination. This is also of great value for mobility studies.

SocialBigdata-CM consists on a multidisciplinar research network for monitoring and analysing the social transformation produced by the technological change in the social (inequalities in the digital society and new interactive practices), political (social movements and public participation) and economic (digital society, collaborative and formal economy) perspectives. A consortium made of six research groups from three Madrid based Universities will be in charge of developing the research, formative and dissemination activities.
