Assistant Professor Geography Liveability & GIS (1,0 fte)
The Assistant Professor will contribute to teaching geographical information system (GIS) to undergraduate and graduate students, and will do research in which GIS is used.
The main teaching task will be the bachelor courses on Spatial Information and GIS (GERI1 and GERI2) and the optional master course Advanced Spatial Analysis. The Assistant Professor will be the coordinator of these courses, but will share the responsibility and cooperate with other staff members. In addition, the Assistant Professor supports in other courses where GIS is used, e.g. in assignments. He/she may have other teaching tasks, such as the supervision of bachelor or master theses.
The main research focus fits in the faculty research theme ‘towards Wellbeing, Innovation and Spatial Transformation’ (tWIST), and must be focused on the use of GIS in spatial research. This expertise in research facilitates that teaching is based on research. The Assistant Professor is expected to cooperate in research projects of other staff members in which GIS plays a major role, and to stimulate other staff members to use GIS if this seems effective.
The Assistant Professor will invest 40% of his/her time in research, and 60% in teaching.
Description
- PhD in Spatial Sciences or another relevant discipline, with a preference for a PhD in which GIS has a major role as a research technique
- proven knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS) and the application of GIS in research publications in which GIS is used in international peer-reviewed academic journals
- positive attitude to multi-disciplinary research, both to quantitative and qualitative (GIS-based) research ability to write research proposals in order to attract funding from research foundations
- a network of connections in domains where GIS is used, both academic and professional, and willingness to invest in external relations and in to participate in external projects, events and presentations, representing the Faculty
- affinity with integrating research in teaching experience in various teaching approaches; awareness of and willingness to use the latest innovations in teaching
- a strong drive to share ideas on the application of GIS with colleagues and students; a drive to energize and to invest in students and staff members meets the obligatory requirement for the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO)
- fluency in English and Dutch or the willingness to learn Dutch.

The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and relevant work experience up with a minimum of € 2,919 gross per month (scale 10) to a maximum of € 5,070 gross per month (scale 12) for a full-time position excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favorable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The full-time appointment of this Assistant Professor is basically a permanent position, formal evaluation will follow before the end of the second year. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for the University of Groningen.
